LANDSCAPE

Construction mid 2026
HAWTHORN
This Hawthorn landscape reimagines an existing garden as a dynamic setting for entertaining, shaped to accommodate both large gatherings and more intimate moments. The design responds to the home’s restrained, brutalist architecture by introducing a landscape that is deliberate and composed, yet softened through natural materials and spatial layering. Drawing on Japanese and Chinese garden principles, the landscape is guided by ideas of procession, pause, and balance. A floating concrete entry path sets the tone on arrival, its stepped form creating a measured transition from street to garden. Repetition of natural stone boulders throughout the site reinforces a sense of rhythm, with these elements functioning both as steppers and informal seating, encouraging movement and interaction within the space. Toward the rear, the garden opens to a floating deck that wraps around a proposed zen room, forming a calm focal point within the landscape. A concrete bench servery integrates seamlessly into this setting, supporting entertaining while maintaining a strong architectural presence. Planting is intentionally restrained, allowing materiality, form, and negative space to carry the experience. To ensure the garden remains active and adaptable, a pickleball court is incorporated at the rear of the site. Carefully integrated into the overall layout, it adds a layer of energy and play without compromising the garden’s sense of calm. The result is a landscape that balances structure and softness that supports social connection, movement, and quiet retreat within a cohesive, contemporary framework.
